ATLANTA — Two Thrashers have landed on the Eastern Conference All-Star ballot, one who is familiar with being in the spotlight on All-Star weekend, and one who has played very well for most of the early season.
Winger Ilya Kovalchuk and goaltender Kari Lehtonen are on the ballot. Fans can begin voting one week from today for the 57th All-Star game, slated for the Bell Centre in Montreal on Jan. 25.
Lehtonen has been solid for the Thrashers through the early going, until a stomach virus dropped him from the lineup last weekend. Lehtonen’s record might not be stellar – he’s 2-5-2 – but he’s kept the Thrashers in several games when the defense in front of him has been less that great.
Kovalchuk broke out of a scoring funk with a two-goal performance in Sunday’s victory over Florida at home. Kovy has five goals and four assists on the season. The leading vote-getter for the 2004 All-Star game, Kovalchuk also made the team last season, when the game was held at Philips Arena.
